TB 4, WSH 3: Kucherov stays hot, leads Lightning past Capitals

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Lightning outlasted the Washington Capitals on Saturday night, managing a 4-3 regulation victory over their former Southwest Division rival.

Here's what you need to know about Saturday's game:

  • Twenty-one-year-old Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov is scorching hot at the moment. The skilled right wing scored a goal and an assist on Saturday night, pacing the Lightning to their 4-3 win over the Capitals. Kucherov now has five goals, four assists, nine points and 17 shots in the last five games.
  • Lightning defenseman Anton Stralman is playing major minutes in injured teammate Victor Hedman's absence. Stralman played over 24 minutes on Saturday and has logged over 22 minutes in six of the seven contests he's played since Hedman broke his hand.
  • Alex Ovechkin managed an assist on Saturday night, putting an end to his career-worst five-game scoring drought.
  • The new-look Capitals defense appeared sturdy on Saturday, as it has all season. The Lightning emerged victorious on Saturday because Ben Bishop simply outplayed Braden Holtby. Bishop stopped 35 of 38 shots faced, including all 12 Capitals shots in the third period, to record his seventh win of the season.
