Timberwolves' Rubio out indefinitely with ankle sprain; could miss 7-8 weeks

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Timberwolves will have to make do without Ricky Rubio for a while.

The team announced on Saturday that Rubio is out indefinitely with a significant left ankle sprain, and USA Today Sports' Jeff Zillgitt reports Rubio could miss some serious time.

Rubio sustained the injury during Minnesota's overtime loss In Orlando on Friday when he landed on Magic guard Willie Green's foot on a drive and had to be helped off the court. X-rays came back negative for breaks Friday, but an MRI taken Saturday morning confirmed the sprain.

Rubio has averaged 9.4 points, 10.0 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals through five games so far this season.

The 24-year-old managed to play all 82 games with the T-Wolves last season after missing 50 games over his first two seasons.

Rubio signed a four-year, $55-million contract extension last week.
