Red Wings' Mantha cleared to make AHL debut

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Red Wings prospect Anthony Mantha is one step closer to making his NHL debut.

For now, Mantha is set to appear in his first professional game with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, for whom he's been cleared to play by the Red Wings' medical staff. Mantha broke his tibia during a prospect's game against the Minnesota Wild back in September.

The 20-year-old, who scored 107 goals in 124 games with Val-d'Or of the QMJHL over the past two seasons, will be in the lineup for Friday's game against the Milwaukee Admirals.

Mantha was drafted 20th overall by the Red Wings in the 2013 NHL Draft.
