Report: Astros have checked on Brett Anderson

Reuters

The Houston Astros continue to explore ways to bolster their increasingly talented rotation, and their search recently led them to check in with free agent Brett Anderson, according to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle

The 26-year-old Texas native did nothing in 2014 to dispel his longstanding reputation as an injury-prone player, however, as the left-hander failed to reach 50 innings pitched for a third successive season. Anderson, a second-round draft pick in 2006, fashioned a 2.91 ERA across eight starts for the Colorado Rockies, but underwent surgery on both his finger and back that forced him to the disabled list for the majority of the season.

The Astros, however, have committed just over $17 million towards their 2015 payroll and could look outside the organization to augment a pitching staff that improved dramatically last season. Both left-hander Dallas Keuchel and rookie Collin McHugh enjoyed breakout performances that helped the Astros' rotation fashion a 3.82 ERA in 2014, a marked improvement from one season ago.
