Xander Bogaerts will reportedly remain Red Sox's shortstop

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Xander Bogaerts has nothing to worry about.

The Boston Red Sox still view Bogaerts as their starting shortstop, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe, despite the two reported massive deals the team made to bring in top free agents Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez.

Sandoval will supplant Will Middlebrooks at third base, and it's expected that Ramirez's new home will be in left field, a position he has never played before. Ramirez has spent the majority of his career at short - and put in some brief time at third base in 2012 - but his limitations on defense appear to be pushing him out of the the infield.

Bogaerts' defense has not rated well by advanced metrics over his brief time in the majors, but he's nine years younger than Ramirez.

While Bogaerts likely doesn't need to worry about Ramirez taking his position, Boston is reportedly on the hunt for starting pitching. And Bogaerts figures to be a player many teams ask about.

The 21-year-old is one of Boston's top assets and was a consensus top-10 prospect in baseball before graduating to the majors.

Although he has struggled while amassing a full season's worth of games over parts of two major league years, the Aruba native is expected to be a star, and his slow start has likely done nothing to decrease his value.

Bogaerts is a career .241/.299/.363 hitter - fairing much better against lefties - and flashed some power last season by blasting 12 homers and 28 doubles in 144 games.
