Flyers GM Hextall: 'We played really well for 2 periods ... is that trying?'

It's no secret Philadelphia Flyers general manager Ron Hextall is not happy about his team's performance as of late.

In the month of October, the Flyers won four of ten games, and have continued on that downward spiral in November, winning four of 11 games thus far.

Hextall questioned the team's effort level Thursday after a 5-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

"We played really well for two periods and very poorly for one period. Is that trying?" Hextall said. "Is that frustration because we play well the first period and come out down a goal? That’s a thing we have to overcome as a group and respond to adversity."

When asked about the inconsistent play of goaltender Steve Mason, Hextall assured the media he isn't the only problem. "As a group, a lot of individuals have not been consistent," he said.

Since Nov. 1, captain Claude Giroux has scored 13 points in 11 games. Jakub Voracek leads the NHL in assists with 22 and sits second in scoring with 30 points.

Goaltenders Ray Emery (4-3-1) and Mason (4-7-2) are certainly bigger pieces of the puzzle than Hextall wants to let on. In the end, the Flyers' 8-10-3 record tells the tale.
