Report: LFP to charge Real Madrid over chants towards Lionel Messi, Catalonia

The political context of Real Madrid's rivalry against Barcelona can mar matches that don't even involve the sides.

On Saturday, chants of "Messi subnormal" and "Puta Catalunya", which can be translated to "Fuck Catalonia", could be heard at the Santiago Bernabeu - even though Real Madrid were taking on Celta de Vigo, a club that obviously doesn't feature Lionel Messi and is located far away from Spain's autonomous community of Catalonia.

As a result, the Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) will reportedly take action against Real Madrid for the chants.

However, according to Marca, the LFP can only implement financial sanctions because their new anti-violence measures (which will allow for sections of stadiums to be closed) don't take effect until Dec. 15, meaning Real Madrid will almost certainly be hit with a fine.
