Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was taken to a Charlotte-area hospital Tuesday afternoon after his car was involved in a two-vehicle crash.

Ambulances were on the scene of the accident, which occurred on the Church Street bridge not far from Bank of America Stadium at around 12:30 p.m., according to the Charlotte Observer.

One witness told the Observer that he was walking along Church Street when he saw the two vehicles collide. The witness said Newton's truck was heading south and the other vehicle, a Buick sedan, was crossing the street when they hit.

Newton's truck flipped several times before coming to a rest, the witness said.

CMPD spokesman Rob Tufano said Newton was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. A Panthers official also provided an optimistic update, telling the Observer's Joseph Person that Newton is undergoing tests to make sure he is okay, which is believed to be the case.

The Observer's Jonathan Jones tweeted the following photos and video from the scene, and reported that an officer confirmed Newton was driving at the time of the accident and said he was able to communicate.
