The Houston Astros finally got their coveted reliever.
After missing out on David Robertson and Andrew Miller, the Astros and right-hander Luke Gregerson agreed to a three-year, $18.5 million deal, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.
The 30-year-old has never been a full-time closer and doesn't throw hard, but his career numbers make him a solid option in a bullpen that spent most of 2014 bleeding runs.
Astros relievers ranked 26th in opponent batting average (.260) last season, 27th in WHIP (1.39) and 30th in ERA (4.80).
After spending the first five years of his career with the San Diego Padres, Gregerson made 72 appearances for the Oakland Athletics in 2014. In 72 1/3 innings, he fashioned a career-low 2.12 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 59.
Gregerson has been durable throughout his career, logging at least 66 innings in all but one of his six seasons in the majors. Over the past four seasons, he's posted a 2.47 ERA and 1.10 WHIP while averaging 66 2/3 innings.
With his attention on improving the bullpen, general manager Jeff Luhnow also reportedly agreed to terms with right-hander Pat Neshek.
