A fight right off the faceoff is generally a rather bland, somewhat staged affair, but the letters on the front of the jerseys spiced this one up.

During Thursday's game between the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche, the club's respective captains - Andrew Ladd and Gabriel Landeskog - engaged in a spirited round of fisticuffs off a second period faceoff.

The Avalanche went on to win the game by a score of 4-3 in a shootout, and head coach Patrick Roy later said he used the fight as a point of motivation for the rest of the squad.

“I said to the guys after the period, ‘Let’s respond to that. We have to respond,'” Roy told the Denver Post. “And we never gave up. We were resilient. We competed.”

The win pulled the Avalanche to within 10 points of the Jets for fourth place in the Central Division, meaning they'll need a lot more fight in them to get back in the Western Conference playoff picture.
