Dodgers release Brian Wilson

Ed Szczepanski / USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers have released reliever Brian Wilson, reports Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

The news was later confirmed by the club.

The club designated Wilson for assignment on Tuesday in a move general manager Farhan Zaidi called due to performance (see stack below). The Dodgers are still on the hook, however, for Wilson's $9.5-million salary in 2015 as a result of him exercising his player option.

The right-hander posted an ugly 4.66 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 48 1/3 innings pitched, and missed some time in April with a minor elbow injury.

Wilson, 32, is now free to sign with a club of his choice, providing they want to take a chance on the charismatic hurler.
