- Robbie Lawler finally climbed the mountain more than a decade after Dana White labelled him the next big thing in the sport. Lawler captured the Welterweight title after a grueling five-round decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 181 in December.
- Although Rory MacDonald was originally expected to be Lawler's next challenger after knocking off Demian Maia, Tyron Woodley and Tarec Saffiedine in 2014, it appears he'll have to wait for Lawler and Hendricks to finish their trilogy before he can get a shot at gold.
- Rousimar Palhares, one of two fighters in the top 10 not plying his trade under the Zuffa umbrella, vaulted into the rankings with a leg-destroying kneebar victory victory over former UFC title challenger Jon Fitch at World Series of Fighting 16 in December.
