- Dominick Cruz signaled his return to the Bantamweight division with a first-round demolition of Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 178. Though the former 135-pound kingpin was expected to be champion T.J. Dillashaw's next opponent, Cruz won't be back until late 2015 after suffering another knee injury in training.
- At this point it's unclear who will challenge Dillashaw next, but it could be either Renan Barao or Rafael Assuncao. Barao, a former champion, blew his chance at redemption against Dillashaw after having trouble cutting weight prior to UFC 177 in August.
- Assuncao, though not exactly the most exciting fighter to watch, is riding a seven-fight winning streak, and was the last man to defeat Dillashaw - squeaking by the future champ via split decision in October 2013.
