Shields admits to using diuretics prior to fight with Herman at UFC 150

Jake Shields finally admitted what caused him to fail a post-fight drug test following his UFC 150 scrap with Ed Herman in Denver.

While applying to get a license to face Brian Foster at World Series of Fighting 17 on Saturday, Shields told the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) that he used diuretics to help him cut weight prior to the August 2012 bout, according to MMAFighting.com's Marc Raimondi.

Shields was initially awarded the victory over Herman until it was changed to a no contest following the failed test. The state of Colorado wasn't required to release the results of Shields's test, so the specific substance he used was unknown until Monday.

"I learn from my mistakes," Shields said. "I'd like to think that, at least. I'm not one to go through what I went through before."

The NAC granted him a conditional license to compete pending the receipt of his medical records.

"I didn't know it (the diuretic) was banned, but it was my fault," he said. "It was my responsibility."
