It's been a long journey since his illness, but Jonas Gutierrez is up to his old tricks on the football pitch.

Gutierrez scored a beautiful goal for Newcastle's under-21 squad, his first since returning to football after battling testicular cancer, curling a thumping strike into the top corner of the net.

First goal for Jonas since he won his battle with cancer. What a legend.

"The most important thing is to get fit and play games," Gutierrez said after joining Newcastle's development squad in December, courtesy of the Daily Mail. "Of course, you always want to win, but for me it's about trying to get fit and do the best in training and give 100 percent."

While a return to first-team action is a goal Gutierrez would undoubtedly welcome, the 31-year-old is taking things slow and enjoying the luxury of playing football.

"It's always nice waking up in the morning and knowing I have to train – with the chemotherapy and the treatment I wasn't allowed to do it," he said.

"I missed it a lot and I enjoy it more than ever."
