World Cup champion Gennaro Gattuso has his sights set on a move to Scotland after applying for the vacant managerial position with Hamilton Academical F.C.

Gattuso, who played one season with Rangers during the 1997-98 season, is looking to advance to the next stage of his managerial career with a move to the Scottish Premiership side.

The Daily Mail reported Gattuso is one of 50 applicants who could fill the vacant position after the departure of Alex Neil.

Gattuso has limited experience as a manager, starting in 2013 when he was a player-manager with Swedish side FC Sion before moving on to manage six matches for Palermo until he was sacked. He was most recently in charge of OFI Crete, but resigned in December because of the club's financial difficulties.

The situation at Hamilton would be a desirable destination for the former AC Milan defender, as the Accies currently sit in the top five of the SPL standings and are legitimate contenders for a Europa League qualifying spot.
