John Fox on taking Bears job: 'This has been a fast turnaround'

John Fox's turbulent week ended with him happily landing at O'Hare International Airport as the head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Fox was officially named the Bears' 15th coach in franchise history Friday.

A day after the Denver Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs by the Indianapolis Colts, Fox parted ways with the Broncos franchise.

The 59-year-old spoke to the media upon arriving in Chicago.

"This has been a fast turnaround, no doubt," Fox said to the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs. "In this profession a lot of things happen and you know that when you sign up."

Chicago fired head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery on Dec. 29, after the Bears stumbled to a 5-11 record. It was the Bears' worst campaign in 10 seasons.

"I have been able to do it twice before so that gives you a little bit of confidence. It's a we thing. Whether it's (former Carolina Panthers GM) Marty Hurney or John Elway and now it's Ryan Pace," Fox said of his relationship with general managers.

The Bears hired Ryan Pace as their new general manager on Jan. 8.

After a disappointing year, Chicago is re-hauling its entire coaching staff, with former 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio rumoured to be atop Fox's wish list for his new regime.

"We'll have really good options and we'll have a really good staff," Fox said. "I don't want to get into names just yet."
