Pistons' Jennings done for season with ruptured Achilles
Detroit Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings will miss six-to-nine months with a torn left Achilles tendon, according to a report from Brandon Jennings.
The Pistons later confirmed that Jennings will miss the remainder of the season with a ruptured left Achilles tendon.
Jennings suffered the injury in the third quarter of the team's Saturday loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Losing Jennings is terrible news for both player and team, who were both peaking in the month since Josh Smith was removed from the equation. Once 5-23, the Pistons have gone on a 14-4 tear to get themselves within a game-and-a-half of a playoff spot. That's still a possibility, but it becomes a much more difficult one without Jennings, the team's best shot-creator.
In 41 games, Jennings was averaging 15.4 points and 6.6 assists while hitting 36 percent of his 3-point attempts. With more space to drive and an extra shooter on the floor around him with Smith gone, Jennings had looked like a different player over the last month, shooting 43.9 percent overall, 39.4 percent on threes and averaging 19.8 points and seven assists.
The Pistons are now left reeling and in search of help at the point. D.J. Augustin has been a decent stop-gap at times in the past but has been inconsistent this season and his outside shot has abandoned him. Spencer Dinwiddie once looked a promising rookie but has played just 96 minutes on the season, not appearing to have curried the favor of head coach Stan Van Gundy quite yet.
That has Detroit looking for outside help, with the team kicking the tires on New York Knicks point guard Pablo Prigioni and considering D-League guard Lorenzo Brown for short-term help.
The 25-year-old Jennings will now look to rehab in time for the start of the 2015-16 season, the final year on a three-year, $24-million contract he signed with the Pistons in 2013.
