1984 - Mattsson slows Gretzky's roll

Wayne Gretzky's NHL record 51-game point-scoring streak comes to an end as unheralded goaltender Markus Mattsson leads the lowly Los Angeles Kings to a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers

Gretzky averages three points per game through the season's first 51 games, and finishes with 61 goals and 92 assists for a staggering 153 points. 

1992 - Hull scores 50 in 50 ... again

St. Louis Blues sniper Brett Hull becomes just the second player to score 50 goals in 50 games twice in his career, reaching the half-century mark in 3-3 tie with the Kings. 

Hull's 50 come in back-to-back seasons, and represent the last time an NHL player reaches the accomplishment. 

1937 - Morenz breaks leg

During his homecoming season, Montreal Canadiens great Howie Morenz crashes into the boards and suffers a career-ending injury, fracturing his leg in four places. 

While in hospital, Morenz dies of heart failure nearly six weeks after his injury.
