Report: Blue Jays making 'strong push' to sign Ronald Belisario

With Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon appearing to be an unlikely fit, the Toronto Blue Jays look poised to take a chance on another veteran reliever.

The team is reportedly making a strong push to sign right-hander Ronald Belisario, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.

Belisario endured a miserable 2014 campaign with the Chicago White Sox, in which the 32-year-old posted a 5.56 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and eight saves in 66 1/3 innings. He was anointed closer when Matt Lindstrom suffered an ankle injury in May but his tenure lasted a little over a month after converting only eight of 12 save opportunities.

The White Sox designated him for assignment in late November before he elected free agency.

Prior to last season, Belisario enjoyed a pair of successful seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. From 2012-2013, he owned a 3.24 ERA and 118 strikeouts over 139 innings.

Toronto appeared to be a suitor for Papelbon, with several reports earlier this week stating they had interest in the All-Star closer, but general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Wednesday they're unlikely to make a move for a reliever with his type of high-priced salary.

The Blue Jays remain without a closer after Casey Janssen signed a one-year, $5-million deal with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Morosi also reported the Blue Jays have contacted the representatives for free-agent relievers Rafael Soriano, Burke Badenhop and Francisco Rodriguez.
