Report: BYU to count as Power 5 opponent for ACC teams

Lance Iversen / USA TODAY Sports

Games played against BYU will now reportedly count for Atlantic Coast Conference teams as playing a Power 5 team outside the conference, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy

ACC teams will be required to include at least one non-conference Power 5 team on their season schedule starting in 2017.

The ACC originally announced in spring meetings last year that games against the Cougars wouldn't count as playing against a Power 5 team. However, McMurphy reports that the conference changed this decision because there will be fewer non-conference opportunities within the Power 5 leagues. The Big Ten, Pac 12, and Big 12 conferences either currently play or will be playing in nine conference games.

McMurphy also reports that BYU, which has gone to postseason games for 10 years in a row, will improve the overall strength of the ACC schedule.

Virginia is the only ACC matchup currently on BYU's future schedule.

The Southeastern Conference will also stipulate that its members play at least one non-Power 5 team starting in 2016.
