Report: Packers to name Ron Zook special teams coordinator

Michael Heinz / US PRESSWIRE

The Green Bay Packers will name Ron Zook their new special teams coordinator, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, who passes along a tweet from Packers linebacker Sam Barrington announcing the news.

It's unusual for a player to announce a coach hiring. It's possible Barrington jumped the gun and the Packers have yet to finalize a promotion for Zook, who joined the team as a special teams assistant in 2014 after six years as head coach at Illinois. But all indications are Zook is the man the Packers want in the role.

The Packers fired former special teams coach Shawn Slocum last week, days after a pair of special teams blunders contributed to Green Bay's historic collapse in the NFC Championship Game.
