Report: NHL to rename Corsi, Fenwick in website redesign

The NHL will soon adopt analytics on its official website, but two of the most common advanced metrics will reportedly be published under different names.

Corsi and Fenwick will be referred to as shot attempts and unblocked shot attempts respectively, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.

NHL.com will undergo a redesign with a launch planned for Friday. The league originally announced the planned implementation of advanced statistics following the All-Star break. League COO John Collins said at the time that the changes would be made by late February.

The decision to rename the two most commonly used analytics categories on the site was made following serious internal debate, sources told Sportsnet.

The NHL will unveil the changes at an event on Friday morning. The redesign will take effect in four phases over the course of the year, Johnston writes.

Multiple teams hired analytics experts in what was heralded as the "summer of analytics" last offseason. The league then updated its terms of service, prohibiting other websites from repurposing its information.

Many analytics websites, such as HockeyStats.ca, War-On-Ice.com and Stats.HockeyAnalysis.com, have existed for years. It will be interesting to see if and how they are allowed to co-exist with the NHL's new offering.
