It was never going to be the most attractive fixture in the round of 16 of the Champions League, but Basel and Porto played out a 1-1 draw Wednesday that had its fair share of entertainment and controversy.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Roughly 5,000 Porto supporters made the trip to Basel, where the temperature was recorded at one degree Celsius ahead of kickoff.
  • Basel 1, Porto 0: In what was their only chance of the first half, Basel opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Fabian Frei floated an excellent through ball over Porto's backline and Derlis Gonzalez took three touches before slotting his shot past 'keeper Fabiano.
  • Gonzalez lasted only 14 minutes on the pitch after scoring as he was forced to exit the match with an apparent head injury. He was replaced by Davide Calla.
  • Porto were unlucky to not be awarded a penalty in the 30th minute, when Jackson Martinez was wrestled to the ground by Walter Samuel and had his armband ripped off as a result.
  • The remainder of the first half saw Porto control the majority of possession. However, a lack of creativity in the final third kept them off the scoresheet.
  • It appeared Porto had finally found an equalizer immediately following the interval, but Casemiro's goal was controversially called off after two offside players were deemed to have blocked 'keeper Tomas Vaclik's vision.
  • Basel 1, Porto 1: In the 79th minute, Porto finally got on the scoresheet when Walter Samuel, who was starting in place of the suspended Fabian Schar, handled a Danilo cross in the box. Danilo stepped up to the spot and converted the ensuing penalty.
  • The final moments of the match failed to produce anything noteworthy as Porto appeared content with their away goal and Basel seemed physically exhausted.
  • Porto will host Basel in the second leg of the series on March 10.
