Jeremy Langford led all running backs with an unofficial time of 4.42 seconds. However, Langford's run was the slowest for a leading score in a given year since Cedric Peerman's 4.45 run topped all running backs at the combine in 2009. CBS Sports projected Langford as a mid-round pick, and he likely improved his draft stock with the best sprints of the day.
Karlos Williams ran the second-fastest time out of all running backs, despite the fact that he weighed in at a compact 230 pounds. Williams's combination of speed and power make him an asset for teams that run a number of power formations.
Melvin Gordon is making a strong case to be the first running back selected at the draft. Gordon set the Big 10 single-season record for rushing yards, and a stellar performance at the combine may see the Wisconsin star rise into the first round.
Other Notable Performances
- David Cobb, Minnesota - 4.81 sec.
- Joey Iosefa, Hawaii - 5.02 sec.
David Cobb suffered an apparent leg injury during the 40-yard dash, hobbling through the last quarter of his run. Cobb's time would have been significantly better if he finished the run unabated.
Joey Iosefa's turbulent combine continued Saturday. Iosefa bench pressed the most reps out of any running back Friday, but posted an abysmal 5.02 40-yard dash time, the worst at his position. Some have speculated that he'll be converted to fullback if he's drafted.
