Duquesne assistant coach John Rhodes is in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery due to being hit by a car.

The coach, who recently announced that he has cancer, suffered what is described as a "severely broken leg" and a "slight fracture in his neck," Chris Harlan of Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

The injury occurred on Tuesday when he was with the team in Philadelphia for their 87-72 loss to La Salle.

Dukes coach Jim Ferry spoke on Rhodes' status on Saturday:

He's doing better. He's out of the ICU. He's scheduled to have surgery again on Monday. He's pretty banged up. But as everybody in this room knows, "Big John" is probably the most positive person out there. He's been more positive about it to us than we have to him.
