DAY 5

Beasley pulls away from the pack

Vic Beasley posted the best time of any linebacker in the 40-yard dash Sunday, proving he has a very strong chance to be the first edge rusher off the board in April's draft.

Williams does enough to cement stock

Top defensive line prospect Leonard Williams turned in a solid time of 4.97 seconds in the 40-yard dash, though he finished well back of the times posted by the top speed rushers

Williams brings a lot more to the table than speed, so it's fair to say he didn't significantly harm nor boost his draft stock with his timed speed. He's still expected by most analysts to be the first defensive player drafted.

Defensive backs hit the bench press

Cornerbacks and safeties took their turn on the bench press Sunday as they prepare for their on-field session Monday.

Josh Shaw led all corners with 26 reps and Ibraheim Campbell was tops among safeties with 23.

Ray not allowed to run

Shane Ray says he wanted to run the 40-yard dash with his fellow edge-rushing prospects but was denied.

Though Ray has apparently been running for more than a week, combine doctors decided not to clear him to run because of a nagging toe injury.

Owamagbe Odighizuwa steals the show

UCLA's Owamagbe Odighizuwa put together an excellent combine Sunday, improving his draft stock. The defensive end had the best broad jump and vertical jump at his position and ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash with a 4.62 run.

Gregory says weight was due to stomach virus

Pass-rushing prospect Randy Gregory weighed in at a surprisingly svelte 235 pounds at the combine. It turns out he had a pretty good reason for not bulking up: he was in the hospital.

Gregory says he contracted a nasty stomach virus ahead of the combine that caused him to drop weight. Despite his recent health woes, Gregory was very impressive in on-field drills Sunday.

Combine Stock Watch: Beasley, Dupree flash

In addition to the top 40 time among defensive linemen, Vic Beasley also posted very strong results in the bench pressvertical jump and broad jump. They may just have to change his last name to "Beastly."

Beasley wasn't the only top pass rushing prospect to solidify his draft first-round stock. Alvin "Bud" Dupree nearly matched Beasley's time in the 40-yard dash and also posted top-two finishes in both vertical and broad jump.
