Pistons' Van Gundy says Jennings is 'on board' with addition of Jackson
There's no point guard controversy in Detroit. At least, not yet.
With injured point guard Brandon Jennings out for the season, the Detroit Pistons moved to pick up a disgruntled Reggie Jackson to handle the point. In his first two games in Detroit, Jackson is averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, seven assists per game and looks poised to stick around long-term.
To avoid any misunderstandings, Pistons president and head coach Stan Van Gundy personally met with Jennings for 20 minutes to discuss the move, reports Rod Beard of the Detroit News.
"Brandon and I talked and I told him what our thinking was both in terms of bringing Reggie in and what our thinking was going forward," Van Gundy said Thursday. "I thought that was important; it wasn't something I wanted to do over the phone. He and I sat down and talked for 20 minutes or so."
The Pistons have made it clear that they intend to re-sign Jackson, who is a restricted free agent this summer. Jennings is owed $8.3 million next season and came into his own this year, averaging 17.1 points and seven assists per game following the departure of Josh Smith.
"Brandon is a great guy and a team-oriented guy and understands the situation. He probably would've rather that we didn't (pick up Jackson)," Van Gundy said. "He's on board; he knows what we're trying to build here. Brandon really wants to win, so he was fine with it. There was no problem or pushback from him or anything else."
