Kimmo Timonen's journey back to NHL ice has taken a sharp turn - right into the Western Conference playoff race.
The Philadelphia Flyers traded Timonen to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday for a second-round pick in 2015 and a conditional fourth-round draft selection in 2016, both teams have confirmed.
The conditional pick will become a third-round selection with two series wins and a second-round pick should the Blackhawks advance to the Stanley Cup Final with Timonen making at least 50 percent of the starts, per ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.
It's a considerable haul for Philadelphia and a roll of the dice for the Hawks, who are turning to a 39-year-old defenseman who hasn't played in 10 months to aid a beleaguered blue line.
Timonen, who carries a $3.5-million cap hit, had his season derailed this summer when blood clots were discovered on his legs and lung. He has only just resumed skating this month, and has been working toward a potential debut this weekend.
He was a top-20 possession defenseman last season, doing most of his damage offensively in a distributing role on the Flyers' power play.
The veteran of 15 seasons made it to the Stanley Cup Final just once back in 2010 when the Flyers lost in six games to the Blackhawks.
