Zlatan Ibrahimovic apologises for post-match rant
Zlatan Ibrahimovic released a statement Sunday to clear the air about his post-match comments following Paris Saint-Germain's loss to Bordeaux.
The striker went on a tirade afterwards, seemingly insulting the country in the process, but was quick to deny any malice towards France or its citizens and put the blame on the inconsistency displayed by the referee.
I want to clarify that my words tonight were not directed against France or French people. I was speaking purely in terms of football. I lost the game, I accept that, but I can't accept it when the referee doesn't follow the rules. It is not the first time and I'm tired of it. I would like to apologize if anybody was offended or interpreted my words the wrong way."
His comments were made in English, with many French outlets misinterpreting his message as he walked by reporters following his altercation with the match official.
Ibrahimovic scored two goals in the game, including a late penalty, but PSG were undone when Diego Rolan scored the winner for Bordeaux in the 89th minute.
His apology, however, likely won't be enough to prevent the French Football Federation from punishing the Swedish striker.
