Strengths
- Good athlete that can create size mismatches if used out wide.
- Has the length to be a major factor in the red zone.
- Works the middle of the field well. Could make his living in the NFL pulling away from linebackers on crossing routes.
- Strong leaping ability.
- Shows excellent body control to continue in stride after climbing the ladder to pull in a reception.
Weaknesses
- Too small to be a full-time tight end and too slow to be an elite receiver. Only posted a 4.70 40 time at the combine.
- Below-average hands led to drop issues at Michigan.
- Catches awkwardly at times and lunges at the ball with his hands, instead of cradling it in.
- Doesn't do enough after the catch for someone his size. Shies away from contact and gets taken down too easily by smaller defenders.
NFL player comparison: Marques Colston
Funchess and Colston have similar body types and both find a way to make plays despite their lack of speed. Colston is a little more sure-handed, but the younger Funchess moves much better. Colston was also slated by many to be a tight end when he arrived in New Orleans, but the Saints have utilized him out wide and maximized his ability.
Ideal fit: New Orleans Saints
With Colston aging and the departures of Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills, the Saints are going to need more weapons for Drew Brees to work with. Head coach Sean Payton has used players like Funchess effectively before and he is one coach that understands how to create mismatches.
Draft Projection: Round 2-3
