UConn's Geno Auriemma: Men's college basketball is 'a joke'

Geno Auriemma doesn't care for men's college basketball.

The UConn women's basketball coach - currently chasing its 10th national title - had some choice words for the media Wednesday in relation to men's basketball.

"I don't coach it. I don't play it, so I don't understand the ins and outs of it. But as a spectator watching it, it's a joke," said Auriemma. "There's only like 10 teams, you know, out of 25, that actually play the kind of game of basketball that you'd like to watch.

"This is entertainment we're talking about.  People have to decide, do I want to play 25 bucks, 30 bucks to go see a college scrum where everybody misses six out of every ten shots they take, or do I want to go to a movie?"

Auriemma's criticism narrows in on poor offense and the inability of teams to rack up points.

"The bottom line is, nobody can score," said Auriemma. "And they'll tell you that it's because of great defense, great scouting, a lot of teamwork. Nonsense, nonsense. College men's basketball is so far behind the times it's unbelievable."

Auriemma's record boasts the highest winning percentage in the history of women's basketball, so he may know what he's talking about.
