Report: Maple Leafs' brass meeting to decide Nonis' future, changes could come Monday
The Toronto Maple Leafs' management team is reportedly discussing the future of general manager Dave Nonis, and personnel changes could come in less than 48 hours.
"All signs are pointing (to the fact) that Monday will be the day when a lot of major announcements are made involving the Leafs," Sportsnet's Damien Cox reported on Saturday's edition of "Headlines" on Hockey Night in Canada.
Nonis is reportedly being evaluated.
"It's not clear whether (or not) Dave Nonis is back. He's still meeting with (team president) Brendan Shanahan. In fact, the management team is hunkering down this weekend to make their final decisions."
Interim head coach Peter Horachek is not expected to be retained.
"We know and everybody knows, I think, including (Horachek), that he will not return as Maple Leafs coach," Cox said. "But I think the changes are going to impact a lot of other areas."
Cox added the following after the segment aired:
Nonis surprised the hockey world by finding a taker for David Clarkson's contract, trading him to the Columbus Blue Jackets for injured forward Nathan Horton on Feb. 26.
The GM gave Clarkson a seven-year, $36.75 million deal in the summer of 2013 after taking over in January of that year following the firing of Brian Burke. Nonis also inked captain Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year deal.
The Leafs went 9-28-4 under Horachek, who took over after the firing of Randy Carlyle. Horachek's tenure included a road record of 1-19-3.
TSN's Darren Dreger reported Saturday afternoon that the club is planning to move quickly on making changes after finishing with the fourth-worst record in the NHL.
