Royals crush Twins, remain MLB's only undefeated team
The Kansas City Royals are doing their best to dispel the narrative that last season's Cinderella run to the World Series was a mirage. And, so far, they're doing just that.
Kansas City spoiled the Minnesota Twins' home opener at Target Field on Monday with a 12-3 blowout win to improve to a perfect 7-0.
The Royals, coming off their first World Series appearance since 1985, are Major League Baseball's last remaining undefeated team after the Detroit Tigers fell 5-4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
The 2003 Royals were baseball's last team to start a season 7-0. That squad began the year with a 9-0 mark, which is the best start in franchise history.
Five Royals players had multi-hit games Monday, including Kendrys Morales who blasted his second homer of the season. Kansas City chased Twins starter Trevor May after 5 1/3 innings, battering him for five runs on eight hits before beating up on Minnesota's bullpen.
Royals left-hander Danny Duffy made his second start of the season, throwing 6 1/3 innings of three-run ball. He walked one and struck out three to earn his first victory of the year.
The Royals and Twins have Tuesday off before resuming their three-game set Wednesday. Edinson Volquez will get the ball opposite Kyle Gibson.
