Backstrom, Grubauer lead Capitals to comeback win over Islanders in Game 2
Philipp Grubauer didn't steal this one, but it might feel a little bit like he did.
The Washington Capitals' emergency starter made 18 saves in his playoffs debut and Nicklas Backstrom catalyzed a third-period comeback to help the home side stave off a 2-0 series deficit, defeating the New York Islanders 4-3 on Friday night.
Star Performer: Backstrom was tremendous. He claimed secondary assists on the Capitals' first two goals before tying the game early in the third with a beautiful snap shot as he waltzed into the high slot.
Turning Point: For better, eventually, Game 2 turned for the Capitals when Braden Holtby didn't show up to the rink. He was announced as a late scratch due to illness less than a hour before puck drop, giving the third-stringer Grubauer his debut start.
Goalie Comparison: Jaroslav Halak was under siege for most of this one, but managed to hold it down (with the help of 27 blocked shots) through the 30-minute mark. But when the pucks started getting through with regularity, Halak couldn't halt the momentum.
Goalie | Shots | GA | Saves | SV% |
---|---|---|---|---|
Halak | 35 | 4 | 31 | 0.886 |
Grubauer | 21 | 3 | 18 | 0.857 |
Top Highlight: Backstrom was best, again. The noted playmaker made one for himself with this deceptive equalizer.

Stat of the Night: The Islanders were 20 minutes away from their first 2-0 series lead in 32 years. That'll have to wait a bit longer.
