Joe Thornton calls out Todd McLellan, teammates at locker cleanout
Joe Thornton had some choice words for his head coach and some unnamed teamates as the San Jose Sharks met the media for the final time this spring.
The veteran made the comments Wednesday, just over a month after lashing out at general manager Doug Wilson for criticism the executive levied against Thornton at an event for season-ticket holders.
Thornton was asked if a coaching change is necessary.
"I have no idea," the former captain told reporters. "Todd has to talk to his family. Maybe he should talk to this family as well in here. We'll see what happens."
The Sharks missed the playoffs by 10 points, one year after blowing a 3-0 first-round series lead and losing in seven games to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings.
Thornton said any Sharks players who let that collapse affect their play should not be his teammates.
"It shouldn't have. If it did we don't want them here. We want tough individuals that can handle adversity. If it did, we don't want you here."
Wilson and McLellan are reportedly leaning toward a mutual separation which would likely need to be announced before the coach leaves to guide Canada at the world championship later this month.
