Detroit Tigers right-hander Alfredo Simon busted out the newest weapon in his repertoire Wednesday night at PNC Park, when he uncorked a 58-mph eephus pitch to Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez in the second inning.

Simon's eephus missed the strike zone by a considerable margin, but the pitch very much accomplished what Simon intended, according to the strategy he outlined in spring training.
"I just want the hitter, the eyes, to see a slow pitch, and then when I come with a hard two-seamer, it's going to be hard for them to hit the ball," he said.
Alvarez, naturally, swung through Simon's next pitch, an 83-mph offering with some sink that ended up right in the middle of the plate.
