Jefferson says it's unlikely he will opt out, Zeller likely needs surgery

After a season that came up short of expectations, the Charlotte Hornets have some issues to resolve this summer, and they're focused around the team's front line.

Center Al Jefferson told reporters Thursday it is unlikely he will exercise the opt-out provision in his contract. The 30-year-old has a $13.5 million player option for 2015-16. Coming off a knee injury, it's a tough choice for the 11th-year veteran as the option is more than he'd likely command on the open market yet less than he might reap in a potential new multi-year deal.

"I've got unfinished business here," Jefferson said, adding he'd like to lose 25 pounds before next season.

Jefferson was limited to 65 games this season, averaging 16.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game.

Meanwhile, his frontcourt partner Cody Zeller, who played in only one of the Hornets' last 20 games, may need right shoulder surgery, according to coach Steve Clifford.

Zeller hurt his shoulder against the Washington Wizards on March 9.
