Report: Oilers to announce hiring of Chiarelli on Friday, will oversee hockey ops
Peter Chiarelli may not be out of work for long.
The Edmonton Oilers will reportedly hold a news conference Friday to announce the hiring of the former Boston Bruins general manager.
The move was first reported by TSN 1260's Jason Gregor and later by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Chiarelli was fired last week after the Bruins missed the playoffs by two points. He reportedly met with the Oilers' brass in Edmonton this week.
It's not clear what title Chiarelli will be given in the Oilers' hierarchy, but an appointment to general manager or president of hockey operations would require the dismissal of either Craig MacTavish or Kevin Lowe, who hold each of those positions, respectively.
Update: The Oilers are set to have a meeting Friday morning, during which various personnel changes will be announced, including the hiring of Chiarelli to oversee all hockey operations, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
