Bettors banking on Pacquiao-Mayweather ending in a draw
Nothing would be more disappointing than Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fighting their way to an inconclusive 12-round draw, unless you bet on it.
Savvy gamblers appear to be banking on a draw, as the MGM sportsbook odds have decreased from 22-1, when betting on the fight opened, to 8-1 this week.
There have been twice as many bets placed on a draw than any other outcome, according to David Purdum of ESPN.
"That will minimize as we get closer, but right now it's not good - our worst-case scenario," MGM vice president of race and sports Jay Rood said.
Bettors believe that the money available for a rematch is too significant for either Mayweather or Pacquiao to spoil with a quick knockout, thus a defensive draw is the most likely outcome. They may be right as MGM is expected to open a new 20,000-seat arena early next year. Perfect timing for a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch.
Mayweather is still the favorite and significant bets are beginning to trickle in on the undefeated legend as the fight gets near. Both sides are still seeing significant action though.
"The past week we have finally seen some significant favorite money," Station Casinos vice president of race and sports Art Manteris told ESPN. "The frequency of wagers on Pacquiao is still very one sided. The big bets, however, are now trending on Mayweather. Some very sharp players have already unloaded on Mayweather. Some are waiting for expected downward price movement fight weekend."
