Grizzlies' Mike Conley undergoes facial surgery, status unknown for 48 hours
It's a good thing the Memphis Grizzlies were able to build a 3-0 series lead.
Injured point guard Mike Conley is on the mend after undergoing surgery Monday to repair a facial fracture, and Memphis will be without him for an undetermined amount of time as they try to close out their first-round playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Conley had already been ruled out for Game 4, and the Grizzlies need to wait at least 48 hours after Conley's surgery before determining a possible timeline for return, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. The Commercial Appeal warns that his recovery could take weeks, though it's unclear if that's information from team sources or merely speculation based on precedent.
Conley was forced from Game 3 on Saturday after Blazers guard C.J. McCollum elbowed him in the eye socket. While Memphis closed out the victory, Conley was taken to a medical facility for further evaluation, finishing his night with 14 points and four assists.
Without Conley, the Grizzlies will look to Beno Udrih and Nick Calathes to both lead the offense and slow down Damian Lillard. Calathes is a strong defender and a ball-hawk on defense, while Udrih is a capable scorer off the bench, so the two of them may be able to stem the tide in tandem.
