Report: Brewers letting teams know they're willing to deal veterans
A miserable start to the season could have the Milwaukee Brewers preparing to clean house.
The Brewers fell to a league-worst 5-18 record following a 1-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday and Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY reported that the organization is letting other teams know that their veterans are available.
Nightengale listed pitchers Matt Garza and Kyle Lohse, in addition to third baseman Aramis Ramirez as potential veterans that could be available.
The Brewers swoon began last September, as the team took a 73-63 record into the final month of the season before finishing 82-80. Manager Ron Roenicke kept his job but now it appears the front office is ready for a shakeup.
Garza, who is 2-3 with a 4.60 ERA through five starts, has three years and $37.5 million remaining on his contract
Lohse is off to a disappointing start as the right-hander owns a 1-4 record and 7.28 ERA in 29 2/3 innings. The 36-year-old is owed $11 million this season in the final year of his deal.
Ramirez has also struggled through the first month, hitting .214/.236/.357 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 20 games. The three-time All-Star is coming off a 15-home run, 66-RBI campaign that also saw him hit .285/.330/.427. Ramirez is in the final year of a deal that will pay him $14 million. The 36-year-old said last month that he is expecting to retire at the conclusion of the season.
