Pacquiao requires shoulder surgery, out 9-12 months
Manny Pacquiao revealed after a unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather that he fought with a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, which he suffered during a sparring session.
Now the former champion will require surgery to repair the injury, and is expected to miss between nine and 12 months.
"We have an MRI scan that confirms he has a rotator cuff tear. He has a significant tear," Dr. Neal ElAttrache told ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. No date for the surgery has been set.
Pacquiao's camp had considered postponing the fight, but instead elected to go forward on the scheduled date after the Nevada Athletic Commission approved the use of numbing agent injections. However, Pacquiao was denied permission the night of the fight.
"I really needed that shot because if I throw a power hook or power jab, it hurt," Pacquiao told Ryan Songalia of Rappler.
According to Pacquiao, the injections are legal and approved by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
"It's not a steroid but its legal here, for numbing," he said. "The problem is we were sabotaged."
The injection wasn't the only issue Pacquiao felt needed addressing.
"I'm so disappointed because for the first time in my boxing career, more than 20 years, they hold my vitamins, they hold my water (from) the dressing room," he said. "This is new."
Pacquiao said he fought Saturday at 60 percent and would like a rematch with the undefeated Mayweather. However, with Pacquiao out for a significant period because of the surgery and Mayweather proclaiming he will fight his final bout in September, the chances of a rematch seem slim.
