Report: Mayweather-Pacquiao to shatter boxing pay-per-view record, may reach 5 million
Although it turned out to be an underwhelming bout, Floyd Mayweather's victory over Manny Pacquiao is set to obliterate boxing's pay-per-view sales record.
Dish Network, DirecTV, AT&T's uVerse, and Verizon's FIOS combined to sell 2.25 million paid viewings of the fight, according to Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole. Satellite companies usually account for 35 percent of total pay-per-view sales, while cable companies frequently account for 60 percent of pay-per-view sales.
The numbers for pay-per-view sales haven't been tabulated yet, but projections show that Mayweather-Pacquiao was sold upwards of 5.5 million times, according to Iole. Mayweather's 2007 fight against Oscar De La Hoya was sold a record 2.48 million times, a total that will likely account for less than half of the Mayweather-Pacquiao total.
Mayweather-Pacquiao was advertised as "The Fight of the Century," with the two boxers promising the last premier showcase in the sport's history. In a disappointing showcase, Mayweather won by unanimous decision and the chance of a rematch now appears unlikely with the undefeated American nonplussed by Pacquiao's post-fight remarks.
