Bobby Bowden feels bad about Jameis Winston 'embarrassment' comment
Legendary Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden is walking back negative comments he made about Jameis Winston earlier this week.
The 85-year-old appeared on The Dan Le Batard Show and said he was surprised by the question and was unprepared to give an answer when he called the Heisman Trophy winner an "embarrassment."
Bowden added that he has called current Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher to apologize for the comments and the negative light it has put the program in.
The original comments were made on The Paul Finebaum Show on Tuesday afternoon.
"I think it's a consensus among Florida State fans and boosters that he was an embarrassment in a lot of ways to the university," Bowden said to Finebaum.
Winston's new head coach Lovie Smith has already come to the No. 1 overall selection's defense saying, "That's a strong statement to make about any young man," before adding, "Jameis Winston is not an embarrassment and I don't think Bobby Bowden is speaking for Florida State in making a statement like that. Normally, when you're in the family, you protect the family."
