VIDEO: Fan attack on River Plate forces Superclasico abandonment
The latest version of the Superclasico will be remembered for all the wrong reasons after River Plate players were attacked as they entered the field for the second half.
Players in a makeshift tunnel emerged in visible discomfort as they rubbed their eyes after a Boca Juniors supporter managed to breach the barrier separating supporters from the pitch and spray an irritant towards rival River Plate players.
Various videos have emerged since the attack that appear to show a fan attempting to break through a barrier near the tunnel where the incident occurred. However, it's not clear if he was the supporter that sprayed the pepper-spray-like substance.
The match was eventually suspended as River players were tended to on the field as they desperately attempted to ease the pain by rubbing their eyes with their jerseys, water and whatever else they could find.
During the chaos, a drone was flown over the field with an object depicting a phantom hanging beneath and the letter "B," which represent River Plate's relegation to the Primera B Nacional in 2011.
Boca supporters then went on to hurl objects towards the group of ailing players and prevented them from leaving the pitch for up to two hours after the initial incident.
River Plate players were eventually forced to leave the field under the guard of riot shields as garbage flew from the stands.
An alternative date for the replay has yet to be decided.
