USA wins bronze with shutout win over Czech Republic at World Championship
Nick Bonino, Trevor Lewis and Charlie Coyle scored goals and Connor Hellebuyck stopped all 39 shots he faced as the United States won the bronze medal with a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic at the World Hockey Championship in Prague on Sunday.
Hellebuyck continued his run as the tournament's best goaltender, out-playing potential future Winnipeg Jets teammate Ondrej Pavelec as the Czech Republic out shot the U.S. by a 39-16 margin.
The hosts dominated play in the final period - out shooting the Americans 16-1 - but could not convert despite multiple opportunities with the man-advantage.
The Czechs also failed to capitalize on a four-minute power play in the second period after Bonino received a double minor for high sticking.
Projected second-overall NHL Draft pick Jack Eichel capped off an impressive tournament with a highlight-reel play. Eichel showed great patience and awareness setting up Lewis for the United States' second goal.
The Americans won their second medal at the tournament in the last three years, accomplishing the feat for the first time since 1962 when they won bronze after earning gold in 1960.
After the game, Czech legend Jaromir Jagr retired from international competition once again.
