Marlins fire manager Mike Redmond
Less than 15 minutes after getting only two hits off Shelby Miller, the Miami Marlins announced the dismissal of manager Mike Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary.
Following the Marlins' 6-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, president of baseball operations Michael Hill said it's about time the club saw some change in order to pave the way for success.
"Hopefully a new voice will spark and motivate our guys to play as capable as we know they are of playing," Hill said. "We're looking for that consistency. We're swinging the bat well at times, but not when we need to do it. We're pitching well at times, but not when we need to do it. I think the solution is in that clubhouse."
A new manager will be introduced Monday morning.
Late Sunday Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports reported that former major leaguer Jeff Conine would be named the team's next manager. The report, however, was apparently refuted shortly after by a Marlins official.
The Marlins have lost three in a row and seven of their last 10, owning a 16-22 record this season while sitting fourth in the NL East. That being said, it's difficult to believe that one game was the deciding factor for the decision.
"I feel bad for them," reliever Steve Cishek said. "It's not their fault."
Redmond was hired away from the Toronto Blue Jays organization in November 2012, and amassed a 155-207 record in three seasons at the helm.
Despite not making the playoffs in that time, he finished fifth in 2014 National League Manager of the Year voting.
