Report: Tom Brady's appeal hearing set for June 23
Tom Brady will finally get to plead his case.
The New England Patriots quarterback will have his appeal hearing for his four-game suspension on June 23, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. It could also be continued on June 25 if the two sides need more time, Schefter notes.
Brady was suspended four games for allegedly doctoring footballs in this year's AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. The Patriots were also fined $1 million and were forced to forfeit a pair of draft picks.
Roger Goodell will reportedly preside over the hearing, despite a request from the NFLPA to have him recused from the proceedings.
"I look forward to hearing directly from Tom," Goodell said recently at the NFL owners meetings. "If there's new information ... I want to hear directly from Tom on that."
Patriots owner Robert Kraft stated that while he isn't happy, the team would not be fighting the sanctions. Goodell said Kraft's decision would not impact Brady's appeal.
The commissioner has also noted that Brady still has an opportunity to give up his cell phone and any other information he may relate to the case. Goodell has expressed that Brady's uncooperative stance led to the severity of the suspension.
A four-game ban clearly took the Patriots by surprise and if nothing changes, New England will have to turn to Jimmy Garoppolo to lead them through the first quarter of the season. Brady and company will certainly be hoping he won't have to wait until October to see the field.
