Former Giants 1st-round pick David Wilson will compete in triple jump

David Wilson never lived up to expectations as a first-round pick in the NFL, but that doesn't mean his professional athletic career is over.

Wilson was selected 32nd overall by the New York Giants in 2012 but failed to make an impact, largely due to complications from spinal stenosis.

The 24-year-old is apparently symptom-free and is competing in the triple jump at the adidas Grand Prix on June 13.

Wilson finished sixth in the event at the 2011 NCAA championships, while starring as a dual-sport athlete at Virginia Tech.

"When I was involved in football, that's all I was thinking about was football," Wilson told USA TODAY's Chris Strauss last August. "That's not bad in my situation, because the person I am, I know I can make track. I'm strong enough to know that there's more to life than that. Some people might have taken it more heavy if they took the same approach I had as just focusing on one thing."

With his football career behind him, Wilson's foray into professional track and field could prove to be more fruitful with a strong performance during Saturday's meet.
